L.S.G.C. (V.R. impressed). A scarce rank. Light contact wear. The recipient is also entitled to the Egypt Medal 1882-89 dated no clasp and the Khedive's Star 1882 for service as a Shoeing-Smith in 'A' Troop R.E. John Abel was born at Loughborough, Leicestershire, in 1844. In 1881 he was a Shoeing-Smith R.E. living at Aldershot Camp with his wife and four children. In 1891 and 1901 he was a storekeeper's labourer living in Gillingham, Kent. In 1911 he was a pensioner living at 14 Lower Milton Road, Gillingham, and he died there in the second quarter of 1912.
