Egypt 1882-89 dated no clasp. Only light wear and pitting. The 'Achilles' (above) was an armoured ship of 1863. With very full documentation - Arthur Matthias was born at Rock, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, on 24/2/56 and was a shipwright before joining the R.N. on 2/7/79; Carp. Mate 1880, Skilled Carp. Mate 1886, promoted to Carpenter (Warrant Officer) 1888. On 5/3/01 he was deprived of 2 years' seniority and dismissed his ship for drunkenness and on 16/5/04 he was court-martialled for drunkenness on board ship and, pleading guilty, he was dismissed the service. He died in Portsmouth in 1909 aged 53. With a copy of the medal roll confirming the award. Apart from service ashore he was at sea on the 4th rate 'Nankin' and the 2nd rate 'Indus'; the ironclads 'Northumberland' and 'Iron Duke'; the battery ship 'Penelope'; the corvettes 'Pylades', 'Tourmaline' and 'Dido'; the battleships 'Benbow', 'Repulse' and 'Resolution'; and the cruiser 'Prometheus'.
