George Herman J. Villhaber was born in Brighton on 18/4/20; he married Betty Long in Brighton in the 4th quarter of 1945 and died in the town in December 1998.
His father owned Ye Olde Barn restaurant in Middle Street, Brighton, and was a Dutch citizen who became a naturalized British subject in 1939 (London Gazette 7/7/39).
The Buffs arrived in Kenya in April 1953 and set up camp in the Rift Valley; their first task was to support isolated police posts and farmers. The unit operated in the Aberdares as part of 39 Brigade and killed 290 Mau Mau and captured a further 194 during its tour which ended in December 1954.
