1914-15 Star (Sto. 1); B.W.M. & V.M. (Sto. 1). With his original parchment service record (see above) and a letter from Engr. Lt-Cdr. Coomber dated H.M.S. 'Mystic' 14/10/16 giving a good reference for the recipient who had been invalided from the ship due to deafness. He served on the destroyer 'Mystic' 15/11/15 to 28/6/16 and was present at Jutland when the vessel was in the 2nd Division of the 11th Destroyer Flotilla captained by Commdr. Claude Allsup. William James Hayes was born in St. Pancras, London, on 25/5/90 and joined the R.N. on 3/1/10; he was previously a bust maker living at 39 Acton Street, Grays Inn Road, London W.C. He served before W.W.1. on the cruiser 'Donegal' and was on the destroyer 'Martin' from 12/5/14 to 14/11/15. The papers confirm the Trio and a Prize Bounty for Jutland. He was invalided out of the service on 4/10/16. He died on 12/12/54 at 3 Albert Road, Canterbury, Kent, leaving £866 to his son.
